Underfloor Heating Decoupling Membrane – Stable, Crack-Resistant Tiling Base
When installing tiles over underfloor heating, movement and thermal expansion are inevitable. This decoupling membrane is designed to manage that movement effectively, helping protect your tiled surface from stress, cracking, and long-term failure.
Developed for modern installations, it creates a separation layer between the subfloor and tile finish while also acting as a practical guide for heating cable layout. The result is a faster installation process, improved heat consistency, and a more durable tiled floor that performs reliably over time.
Why Use This Membrane?
- Minimises the risk of tile cracking caused by heat expansion and subfloor movement
- Keeps heating cables evenly spaced for consistent heat output
- Reduces installation time compared to traditional cable fixing methods
- Helps achieve a flatter, more controlled tiling surface
- Works with a wide range of substrates including timber and existing floors
- Ideal for both small domestic projects and larger commercial areas
How It Works
The membrane forms a flexible buffer layer between the subfloor and the tiles above. This allows minor movement beneath the surface without transferring stress into the tiled finish. At the same time, its structured design holds heating cables in place, ensuring accurate spacing and efficient heat transfer across the floor.

Best Suited For
- Bathrooms and wet rooms with electric underfloor heating
- Kitchens and open-plan living spaces
- Renovation projects where subfloors may have slight movement
- Timber floors requiring added stability before tiling
- Projects where speed and reliability of installation are important
Installation Guidance
- Prepare the surface so it is level, clean, and free from dust or debris
- Fix the membrane using a flexible tile adhesive suitable for the substrate
- Lay heating cables within the designated channels at the required spacing
- Encapsulate cables with adhesive or levelling compound before tiling
- Allow appropriate curing times before switching on the heating system
FAQs
Is this necessary for underfloor heating?
While not always mandatory, using a decoupling membrane significantly reduces the risk of tile cracking and improves the overall performance of your tiled floor, especially with heating systems.
Can it be installed over existing tiles?
Yes, provided the existing tiles are sound and well-bonded, the membrane can be installed directly over them, making it ideal for renovation projects.
Does it raise floor height significantly?
No, it adds only a minimal increase in floor height compared to traditional systems, making it suitable for most retrofit applications.
What tiles can be used on top?
It works with most tile types, including porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone, as long as the correct adhesive is used.
