Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero – Flexible Tile Adhesive (S1)
A high-performance, deformable cement-based tile adhesive designed for dependable fixing of large-format porcelain and natural stone on walls and floors. It’s built for strong adhesion, easier trowelling, and confident installations where movement resistance matters.
Best for
Large-format tiles, porcelain, busy domestic areas, and projects needing a flexible S1-rated adhesive.
Why it’s chosen
Strong bond, workable consistency for larger tiles, and improved performance on demanding substrates.
What to check
Substrate soundness, correct trowel size, coverage, open time, and movement joints for best results.
Key Features
- Flexible S1 performance for improved resistance to movement and thermal variation.
- Ideal for large-format tiles with a consistency designed to support bigger sizes.
- High bond strength for reliable fixing on walls and floors.
- Smooth trowelling for faster, cleaner application and better bed control.
- Suitable for demanding areas when paired with correct preparation and movement joints.
Where It Works Best
- Large-format porcelain wall & floor tiles
- High-traffic domestic floors (hallways, kitchens)
- Projects needing improved flexibility (S1)
- Renovations (with the correct priming/prep system)
Not sure if it’s right?
If you’re fixing extremely low-porosity tiles, very large slabs, or installing over challenging substrates (e.g. existing tiles, certain waterproofing systems, or heated floors), the best result depends on preparation, primers, and correct trowel/bed thickness. If you share your tile size and substrate, you can match the correct adhesive + primer combo.

Technical Details (Quick Reference)
| Type | Cement-based flexible tile adhesive |
|---|---|
| Performance class | S1 deformable (flexible) |
| Recommended use | Walls & floors, including large-format tiles |
| Colour | Varies by pack (confirm option selected) |
| Mixing | Add powder to clean water and mix to a smooth, lump-free paste |
| Coverage | Coverage depends on trowel size, substrate flatness, and back-buttering (see estimator below) |
Note: Always follow the product bag and technical datasheet for exact working times, open time, and cure times. Site conditions (temperature, humidity, substrate porosity) can significantly affect performance.
How to Use (Best-Practice Steps)
- 1) Prepare the substrate: Ensure it’s sound, clean, dry, and free from dust/grease. Flatten uneven areas and repair weak patches.
- 2) Prime when required: For dusty surfaces, porous backgrounds, or renovation work, use an appropriate primer system.
- 3) Mix correctly: Add powder to measured clean water and mix with a paddle mixer until smooth. Rest (slake) if required, then remix.
- 4) Apply with the right trowel: Spread adhesive, comb in one direction, and adjust trowel notch to tile size and substrate flatness.
- 5) Back-butter large formats: For larger tiles, apply a thin coat to the tile back to help achieve high contact coverage.
- 6) Maintain movement joints: Respect perimeter and intermediate movement joints to reduce stress cracking.
Pro install tip
Aim for high contact coverage (especially on floors and wet areas). Lift a tile occasionally to verify bed transfer and adjust trowel/back-buttering as needed.
Coverage Estimator (Practical Guide)
Coverage varies widely by notch size and bed thickness. Use this as a practical planning guide:
| Typical trowel notch | Typical use | Approx. coverage* |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | Small/medium wall tiles, very flat surfaces | Higher coverage |
| 8–10 mm | Most floor tiles, porcelain, general large formats | Medium coverage |
| 12 mm+ | Very large formats / uneven substrates (after levelling where possible) | Lower coverage |
*Approximate guide only. For accurate coverage, base calculations on bag yield and on-site trial area.
Cleaning & Finishing Notes
- Clean adhesive residue from tile faces before it cures, using clean water and a sponge.
- Avoid over-wetting grout joints during final clean-down to protect joint strength and colour consistency.
- Allow adhesive to cure before grouting—timing depends on conditions and tile type.
FAQs
Is Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero suitable for large-format porcelain tiles?
Yes—this adhesive is designed with large formats in mind. Use the correct notch size and back-butter larger tiles to achieve high contact coverage.
Can I use it on walls and floors?
It’s intended for both wall and floor fixing, provided the substrate is properly prepared and suitable for the tile load and installation environment.
Do I need a primer?
Sometimes. Primers are commonly recommended for dusty/porous backgrounds or renovation substrates. If you tell us your substrate (e.g., plaster, concrete, anhydrite, existing tiles), you can match the right primer.
What trowel size should I use?
It depends on tile size and substrate flatness. As a rule, larger tiles need larger notches. Always check coverage by lifting a tile to confirm good bed transfer.
Is it suitable for underfloor heating?
Flexible adhesives are commonly used with heated floors, but performance depends on the full system: substrate preparation, movement joints, and commissioning schedule. Follow UFH guidelines and product instructions.
Always confirm suitability with the latest technical datasheet and site conditions. For best results, match the adhesive, primer, and grout to your tile type and substrate.
