Large Slabs & Book-Matched Tiles — Expert Guide

Large-format porcelain slabs are the highest-impact finish in modern UK interiors — single sheets typically 1200x1200mm, 1200×2800 mm or 1600×3200 mm that deliver the look of natural stone with near-seamless installation. Fewer grout lines, no cold spots, and a continuous vein flow that's impossible to achieve with standard tile sizes. Used as statement walls, worktops, vanity tops, fireplace surrounds and full-height shower enclosures.

Book-matched slabs are sold as paired sheets where the veining mirrors across the join — like opening a book — producing a single dramatic pattern across two slabs. Look for pieces labelled "A & B" or "book-match": these must be ordered together and laid in sequence. They're the signature look behind luxury marble bathrooms, restaurant feature walls and high-end kitchen islands, but at a fraction of real marble's cost and maintenance.

Our slabs are 6 mm thin porcelain (or 12 mm where structural strength is needed for worktops and outdoor pavers) — sintered at over 1,200 °C for a non-porous, frost-proof, heat- and stain-resistant surface that doesn't need sealing. Use them on walls for spa-style en-suites, on floors for seamless open-plan layouts, or fabricated into worktops by a stone mason.

Slab installation is a specialist job — the sheets are heavy, require suction-frame lifters and diamond-blade cutting. Always commission a tiler experienced with large-format porcelain. Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes do large porcelain slabs come in?

Our large slabs are typically supplied in 1200×2800 mm and 1600×3200 mm, with thicknesses of 6 mm for walls and 12 mm for floors and worktops. Each slab can be cut down on-site to create smaller "large-format" tiles (e.g. 800×1600 mm) while keeping the vein flow intact.

What does "book-matched" mean and how do I order it?

Book-matched slabs are pairs where the veining is mirrored across the centre join — opening a "book" of stone pattern. Designs are sold as matched sets (A + B, or in 4-slab quad-matches) and must be ordered together so the veining lines up. We'll always ship pairs in sequence; tell us your wall dimensions and we'll advise on the right number of pairs.

Can I use large slabs on floors and walls?

Yes — 12 mm slabs are rated for both wall and floor use, including wet rooms and underfloor heating. 6 mm slabs are wall-only unless they're bonded to a substrate, making them ideal for shower enclosures, splashbacks and full-height feature walls without adding load.

Can large slabs be used for kitchen worktops and vanities?

Yes — 12 mm sintered porcelain slabs are widely used for worktops, islands, vanity tops and splashbacks. They are heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, non-porous (no sealing required) and won't stain from wine, oil or citrus. Fabrication should be done by a stone mason with experience in porcelain — mitred edges and undermount sink cut-outs are standard.

Can a regular tiler install large-format slabs?

Always use a tiler experienced with large-format porcelain. The sheets weigh 40–70 kg, require a suction-frame lifter to handle, diamond-blade scoring tools to cut, and a back-buttered application with an S2-class flexible adhesive. Bookmatch installations also need careful planning so the vein lines up. We can recommend installers in your area.

Do you offer free samples of large slabs?

Yes — order up to 4 free cut samples from any slab in our range, posted through your letterbox with no payment required. For larger sections we also offer paid full-tile samples — useful for matching against worktops or cabinetry before committing to a full pair of slabs.
